News from Spring 2021
The Covid period was an immense challenge for foundations such as the Emily Paige Short Pioneer Fund, and events which normally take place did not. Originally the EPS grant was £1000 per year, but fortunately we have had backers and sponsors who, because of their generosity, have made it possible for us to pledge a grant of £2000 per year for the next five years to Birkbeck University of London, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. This annual grant to the Department is usually shared among more than one student, depending on need and the project they are doing.
Student field work for mapping and research was nearly impossible during the lockdown. We have agreed with the Department that since no support was granted to students during lockdown, the grant from this year will go towards next spring/summer, plus next year’s planned grant. This will give several students the support they need in achieving their goals in mapping or research, which can take place anywhere in the world.
This spring one Mapping Prize was awarded to Kevin Davidson, whose work on Marsquakes is described on the following page of this website. It’s an amazing story of only one aspect of geology.
Tax deductible donations may be made in the UK or the USA.
100% of the donations go to grants.
Paypal donations may be made on the first page of this website.
To date we have raised £23,000 via music concerts, geology lectures in English in Rome, and direct donations from regular supporters. We sincerely thank you for helping us help students while keeping Emily Paige Short’s memory alive.

November 2019 Science Talk
Dr. Charles Underwood is our guest speaker this year, presenting a topic of great interest to those of us who live in the Mediterranean: how climate, geology and the changing earth resulted in civilization. Modern Romans are in for a fascinating talk.
As a geologist with a keen interest in paleontology and archeology, Dr. Underwood has also been working with both modern and fossil sharks and rays to investigate the development and evolution of their teeth and skeleton, the work initiated by a NERC grant and forming a multidisciplinary study with the Natural History Museum and other universities. If you would like to sit in on one of his presentations click here Come and meet the scientist Saturday, November 23 at 11:30 Suitable for everyone. |
The Search for Intelligent Life in Deep Space
Are there other intelligent beings in the universe? How can modern science try to answer this age-old question? Prepare for a glimpse into the scientific method applied to the search for alien intelligence, and how we might meet them.
The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence attempts to discover, once and for all, an answer to the age-old question of whether other intelligent life exists among the stars. This discussion describes how searches for signs of intelligent life are conducted and informed by scientific astronomical considerations. The implications of search results to date are explored, including thought-provoking ideas such as the concept of Galactic colonisation and a possible glimpse of the future with speculation about interstellar travel.

Funding
The funding for the Emily Paige Short Pioneer Fund, based in the UK, comes entirely from donations. Some are spontaneous donations from individuals or schools, made directly to the Fund through PayPal (button on the homepage), or via bank draft to the Fund. Other donations are made through the Concert and Lecture Series, and through sales of the two postcard packs: Art Pack (15 cards), and Rock Pack (5 cards). The packs are available at fundraising events.
A special thank you to the St. Stephen’s Cultural Center Foundation for their donation of the venue for most of these events, including our first concert of February 18, 2015, which raised nearly €550. View the concert.
If you have an idea or would like to donate your time in performance or by giving a scientific lecture, please let us know. Science students have big projects – some are very long-term - and funding is important.
To date we have raised £29,000. The Fund has registered charity status in the UK: Registration Number 1165508.
